I've observed the ritu-varnana mentioned by you in a few translations of Kalidasa that I read - the rain clouds, the kraunja birds, the peacock, the elephants, etc. I guess we might find more similarities if we looked at the puRam (literal translation outside. Poems that involve the worldly life of men, kings and poets) literature as well as akam (poems of love and romance, like the ones here) literature. I guess despite cultural differences,. there is always a universal thread that runs across civilizations in art and literature, the same way there is a single spark that animates all of creation! :-)Agnibarathihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11168495307511184238noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7559354948180362896.post-41009648423548412822012-10-30T13:45:43.465+05:302012-10-30T13:45:43.465+05:30I love these. The idea of the special spaces/settings though is I think unique to Tamil. The three poems also remind me of three distinctly Indian (well I've come across them often in Sanskrit but I imagine they are broader than that) situations: the wife suffering separation (vipralambha-shringara - love in separation), the sakhi who sets up the hero and heroine, and the man on the road who is desperate to get home (travelling was not the glamorous pastime it is new). Just wish I knew Tamil. Do post more translations of sangam literature and please tell us when you are performing at Urban Solace so we can be there next time...Venetia Ansellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02882174123239442621noreply@blogger.com
